The importance of sleep in cystic fibrosis

Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease that affects the respiratory and digestive systems. For such patients, quality sleep is extremely important, because:

• Supports immunity and helps fight infections.
• Promotes better lung function and recovery after physiotherapy.
• Affects metabolism and appetite.

However, due to nighttime coughing, shortness of breath and reduced oxygenation, patients often have sleep disorders and, as a result, increased fatigue during the day. To improve sleep, it is important to:

• Follow a sleep regimen.
• Monitor the quality of the air in the room.
• Conduct respiratory therapy before bedtime.
• Use oxygen support if necessary.

Quality sleep is one of the key elements of comprehensive treatment and maintaining energy, good mood and quality of life of patients with cystic fibrosis.

Dariya Kostyukova, a pediatric neurologist, functional diagnostics doctor, neonatologist, and specialist in pediatric and adult sleep medicine, tells us more about the topic.
